Review: “Tears – Winds of Dreamland”
30 June 2021Review: “Leprous – Aphelion”
11 November 2021Danish progressive metal band VOLA, formed in 2006, has become one of the standout names of 2021 with their latest album “Witness.” Following the release of their previous albums, “Inmazes” and “Applause of A Distant Crowd,” “Witness” has helped the band gain a significant number of new listeners. Released on May 21st, “Witness” consists of 9 tracks, totaling 44 minutes.
While VOLA is generally categorized under progressive metal and djent, their music incorporates various genres. You can hear elements of progressive pop, rock, and electronica. This blend of styles attracts a wide range of music lovers. Asger Mygind’s pop-oriented vocals contribute to their catchy choruses. Additionally, Swedish drummer Adam Janzi elevates the band’s sound with his polyrhythmic beats on both electronic and acoustic drums.
The opening track “Straight Lines” is one of the album’s most popular songs, featuring catchy vocal melodies. It kicks off with energetic djent riffs and leaves a lasting impression with a striking synth solo.
“Head Mounted Sideways” brings a darker vibe with its heavy djent guitar riffs. The robotic vocals give it a futuristic feel before transitioning back to Asger’s clean vocals in the chorus. An unexpected scream and piano passage towards the end make it stand out.
“24 Light-Years” hypnotizes with its seamless blend of drums and synth. The atmospheric sound created by the guitar is mesmerizing, although the vocals initially reminded me of something out of Winx Club. Over time, they grew on me.
Now onto my favorite track, “These Black Claws.” This song combines hip-hop and nu-metal, a mix I didn’t expect to like. Collaborating with SHAHMEN, it’s the most addictive track on the album for me. Bless’s rap vocals and Asger’s clean choruses complement each other perfectly.
“Freak,” which sits in the middle of the tracklist, is a more laid-back and acoustic song, serving as a nice breather. It features progressive rock elements, especially with its guitar solo that nods to the 70s.
“Napalm,” already a fan favorite, is filled with progressive metal elements and powerful guitar riffs. It’s one of the more memorable tracks on the album.
While “Future Bird” might be seen as one of the weaker tracks by some, I find it quite relaxing. The soothing vocal tone and the overall composition are delightful.
“Stone Leader Falling Down” shifts gears with heavier riffs, feeling more in line with their “Inmazes” album. The breakdown in this song highlights its distinctiveness.
The closing track “Inside Your Fur” wraps up the album beautifully. The side-to-side sound transitions and Asger’s vocals create a perfect ending.
“Witness” is an easy-to-enjoy album with a blend of familiar and unique sounds. While not all nine tracks are perfect, there are definitely songs that you’ll want to listen to on repeat. The band has also released performance videos for many of the songs on YouTube, so be sure to check those out too. My top recommendation from this album is “These Black Claws.” Give it a listen and enjoy!
