Cynic, 1987 yılında, Miami, Florida'da gitarist/vokalist Paul Masvidal ve davulcu Sean Reinert tarafından kuruldu. Kurulduğunda aslında biraz death metal'in içindeydi. Zaten Death grubuyla da bağları var; hatta "Human" albümünde bile parmağı var bu arkadaşların. Ama "Focus" albümüyle işler biraz değişti. Karmaşık yapılar, detaylı melodiler ve derin düşüncelerle dolu sözlerle gelen bu albüm, geleneksel death metalin sınırlarını zorluyor. Death ve Atheist gibi gruplardan etkiler görülse de, Cynic’in fütüristik sesi tamamen kendine özgü.
